Life’s Simple Pleasures That Make Me Smile

Because I have shopping problems that seem to fulfill awkward needs, I was roaming around Patina this afternoon. On one of those glittery color-coordinated shelves, I found a book: ‘Things that Make Me Smile.” OF COURSE THERE WOULD BE A BOOK IN PATINA CALLED SOMETHING FOOFY LIKE THAT.

I went totally gay for it. And was totally inspired to write a list of things that make me smile. Because mama always say’s, “Your outfit isn’t complete without a smile!”

But I’m adding it with a twist. Nobody wants to bust their balls for a smile. So let’s keep it straight and simple. That’s why they invented velcro.

1. The smell of wet leaves. The sound of crisp leaves raining onto the street during a windy fall day. The crunch of a single leave as I step on it and my lips curl because it’s the best feeling in the world.

2. Hearing a song I’ve cordially decided to like for the second time.

3. That teeny red #1 when I log into Facebook (proving to me that someone is giving me their undivided .2 seconds of attention.)

4. The burnt sulfur smell after I blow out a match.

5. Starbucks coffee shops that are conveniently connected to Barnes and Noble.

6. A soft, slightly cool breeze that creeps under my maxi-skirt and tickles my legs.

7. When a good song comes on in my car (impromptu radio surprise) and I alternate raising my shoulders dramatically to the beat.

8. A strong whiff out of any bag of coffee. And the second whiff. The third. Fourth.

9. The smell of hot Pinesol water.

10. Imagining my first house/wedding/first pet/future style ideas and digging through Pinterest everyday to express them via Pin Board.

11. That crispy, buttery ring around a fresh pancake if you use enough PAM.

12. Sincere compliments that make me realize something about myself that I hadn’t before.

13. Small indications from my little sister that she’s growing up into a classy, aware young woman.

14. A furry, bloated puppy looming towards me, running into my leg and twisting his/her body so they can look at me with a dopey smile.

15. Pictures of kittens in baskets with small stuffed animals.

16. Every moment of a thunderstorm from when you see the first dark threatening clouds towards the west, until they nearly burst above you as they’ve blanketed the earth.

17. Looking through old pictures, reading through old diary entries, listening to old songs–anything to ignite past memories.

18. The 30 minutes before opening presents on Christmas.

19. The attached feeling of falling in love with book characters.

20. Old pin-up photos. When everything was done with a wink and smile.

21. A long awaited kiss that happens with someone and turns out to be as sweet and blissful as I’d planned.

22. Spring. The first sensation of sun warming up your bones because you’ve been cooped up all winter.

23. When people you never expected to be funny, are unconventionally funny (i.e. grandmother, stranger, stepmother etc.)

24. When no one sits in front of you in the movie theater. And you can put up your feet in all your glory.

25. A standing ovation.

26. The 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th (etc) round in a wine tasting.

27. The first round of Jock Jam music at a live sporting event (preferably hockey).

28. Standing at the shoreline and letting the waves cover your feet up to your ankles, with sloppy wet sand.

29. Checking your bank account (when you’re sure you’re scraping by a thread) and you have three times as much money as you initially thought.

30. Hearing Frank Sinatra anywhere in public.

31. Non-creepy and flattering compliments from cute, old men.

32. Inspiring quotes/song lyrics that relate directly to what’s going on in your life.

33. Heavy white blankets, an open window, cool breeze, 10AM, the warmth of a guy (or girl) you really enjoy, entangled on your skin.

34. Touching Gucci fur for the first time.

35. Discovering an unexpected lesson when you watch a Disney movie for the first time since the 90s.

36. Jimmy John’s sandwich bread.

37. When you have no inhibitions for an entire day besides eating, watching TV and falling asleep under random intervals.

38. When babies smile at you and shake all of their limbs and twist their head in excitement.

39. Small sips of cold, fresh apple cider.

40. Things that aren’t inline with the current year (i.e. letters in the mail, candlelight, gathering around a fire, vintage, horse and buggy, real conversations and calories).
